During our transport focus we had the local volunteer ambulance officers visit and explain to us what they do and show us through their ambulance.
This is John. He showed us how to get the stretcher out of the ambulance and how to strap someone in. He showed us how the legs of the stretcher have wheels to allow the officers to move them around easily.
He also showed us how the legs fold up as you put the stretcher back into the ambulance.
To the left of John is Arthur, another volunteer ambulance officer. Arthur is also our school gardener and all round fix-it man. He pretty much answers to everything as the children often call him Mr Gardener.
Here John is showing us how the heart monitor works. The children were fascinated listening to John’s heartbeat and watching the printout come out.
We learnt a lot that day about the role of the ambulance driver and what to do in an emergency. We talked about the situations when you would dial 000 and which service you would ask for. The ambulance visit also made the prospect of a trip in an ambulance a little less daunting.
