We discussed how it’s important to look after our bodies and to keep healthy. We started our discussion on the mat and listed the children’s ideas for keeping themselves healthy on the board. The children came up with a range of good ideas from going to the doctor to brushing your teeth (EYLF 3.2 – Children take increasing responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing).
We have a giant mouth and toothbrush that we made a few years ago so we pulled them out to demonstrate how to brush your teeth properly. We brushed up and down and around and around. We brushed at the front and at the back and took our time making sure we got into all those tight little places. A few children came up and had a go, some brushing rather vigorously while others more gently.
After our discussion on the mat we went to the activity tables to make our own mini version of a mouth and toothbrush. We started off by painting half a paper plate red. We stuck packing peanut teeth on and made our toothbrush out of a popstick and some card.
We found two great ideas on Pinterest: Dental Health and Fun Activities for Dental Health Month for our activity table. We had set up a tooth brushing station which included laminated teeth with whiteboard marker plaque to scrub off with a toothbrush
and Duplo teeth with playdough food stuck inside that needed to be flossed out, both providing a good opportunity for building fine motor skills.
