When I start planning for a new focus I brainstorm ideas related to that focus. I’ll do a little concept map with the main focus in the middle and ideas branching out from it. In this case it might include things like: bush survival skills, bush animals and camping equipment. I have a few “go to” places for inspiration. I usually start with Pinterest and see what ideas I may have already collected there and if that fails then do a search there. Though I must admit I find the search function very frustrating in Pinterest. I’d like to be able to do a search just in the Education section for example so I can filter out a lot of irrelevant stuff.
My next stop is looking for resources. I generally begin by looking for books I can use. The bookdepository is where I source my books from. I’ve ordered these 4 books from there for this focus. I’ll also check out the school library and my personal book collection to see what they have to offer. I know I already have Possum Magic, Wombat Stew, Blossom Possum and an Australian Animals Alphabet book that I can use.
We have a lot of camping gear here that can use to decorate the classroom with and I plan to set up the dramatic play corner as a camp site. We have a 4 man igloo type tent which is way too big but we have a smaller beach tent which will work well. When I am out shopping I am always mindful of the new focus and will often pick up something I can use, especially if it’s on sale!
Then I look through topics we have done in the past and see if there’s anything there we can use. We haven’t done a camping topic before but we have looked at Australia before. I save samples of work we’ve done previously on my computer. Here’s a few samples of the Australian animals we’ve made in the past. I plan to revisit some of these as we work our way through the topic.
I’m still looking for more ideas and thinking about the topic this week before school goes back next week. If you’re interested in the ideas I’ve found so far you can find them at the links below:
