Last week when we were talking about stars we had a brief conversation about constellations. We revisited them today and I asked the class what a constellation was. One child told me, “It’s a group of stars.” I had to high five her for being so brilliant and remembering. We had talked about the Saucepan which can be seen in the Australian night sky. We also touched briefly on the Southern Cross and how this constellation is on our Australian flag. We talked about how the group of stars make a picture in the sky.
We provided the children with some gold star stickers, black card and yellow chalk to create their own constellations. There was a variety of constellations in our class. We had cars, a turtle, a cat, butterflies, a saucepan and even Spiderman! The children were utilising a lot of fine motor skills in sketching out their outlines first with the chalk and then placing the stars along the lines. The stars really shone out on the black card. They look awesome displayed on our wall alongside our sun pictures.
