Last week we decided to set up our Home Corner to stimulate Fairy Tale play. We knew we would be covering Goldilocks and the Three Bears so we scrounged around in the storeroom for appropriate props we could add to the Home Corner. The area was already set up as a house utilising a door that the Pre-Primary teacher’s husband had made a few years ago. It’s a free standing door and is great for creating the effect of a house without using a lot of space.
We have some cute little chocolate couches that we bought a few years ago so we used these as chairs for our bears to sit on. We found a blonde wig, some cute hats and lots of random pretty dresses for our Goldilocks to try on. We placed the dressups in a pink crate for easy access and to make them easier to put away.
Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear were all teddy bears dressed up to reflect who they were. Papa Bear is a pretty cool with-it dad in his leather Ben 10 vest and bow tie. Mama Bear is sporting a pretty fawn dress with pink edging and a sparkly purple beaded necklace. Baby Bear wears his red bib with pride knowing that it helps keep porridge off of his fur. You have to admit that Mama Bear and Papa Bear look like a happy couple sitting so relaxed on that couch together.
After another look around the storeroom we found 3 bowls to place on the little table in the centre of the Bears’ house. We also found a set of measuring spoons which were just perfect for the spoons in the bowls. A little spoon for Baby Bear, a medium sized spoon for Mama Bear and a big spoon for Papa Bear. Now all we have to do is sit back, watch the play unfold and add interest items as the need arises. Maybe a jar of honey or a recipe for porridge?
Thanks for extension idea! We just did Goldlilocks and 3 Bears book today and the children decided to act it out themselves. I shall put some bears in home corner next week.
You’re welcome, Julie. We’ve also been making some papier mache porridge bowls. They’re only at the drying stage at the moment though. We’ll paint them on Tuesday.
