There are a number of books that we revisit year after year when we’re talking Number. Some of our favourites are “How Many Snails?”, “How Many Bugs in a Box?” and “Ten Black Dots.” We read Ten Black Dots again this week. The book looks at different things that can be made with black dots. ***see below for a special giveaway***
We’ve been looking at minibeasts as well so we used black dots to make the spots on ladybugs. These ladybugs are our special 6 ladybugs. We used red paint to make an oval and then painted a line across the top third. Everything below the line was painted red and then we painted the top third black. Once they were dry we cut them out and drew a line down the back and eyes and mouth on.
We had 6 black dots each and separated them onto each side of our ladybugs. We talked about all the different ways to make 6. For example, two and four make six and three and three make six. We displayed them on the wall with the sentences we created about how to make 6.
On a different table we were working on our black dot pictures. The children were able to use black dots to make any picture they liked. We did this over two days as it was quite intensive one on one work. It was interesting to see the variety of different ideas. There was an alien with 3 black dots for eyes and an ice cream cone with a black dot for a cherry on top. The children counted their dots and then we printed out a sentence they made up about their picture.
I will be giving away a hardback copy of Ten Black Dots to one lucky reader. To enter all you need to do is post a comment below. I will be sending the book from the book depository so the giveaway is open to anyone from any country on this LIST.
The giveaway begins from now and will last for one week. It will end on Sunday the 8th of July at 12:01pm GMT. The following link shows the time remaining: Countdown Clock.
