A few years ago we did a transport theme and took our class on an excursion on a train. I work in a small rural town so many of my students had never been on a train before. It was an interesting experience for us all.
I created this play set to use in class with the help of my students. First I got my husband to cut some blocks of wood on a 45 degree angle. Then I sanded them back a bit to get rid of any splinters. Afterwards I took them to school and let the children paint them with some watered down acrylic paint. I wanted a limewash kind of effect in different colours. Once they were dry I added some line drawings of windows, doors, trees etc to the sides. My inspiration for the designs were from Made by Joel. Joel makes some very, very, very AWESOME homemade toys. I printed the paper people and vehicles from his website to use alongside the wooden blocks. You can find them here.
We added some sand and a few rocks to complete the play set. This has been one of the class’ favourite play sets and also one of mine.
