We’ve been focussing on colour this week and incorporating it into a sea/summer focus. We made some fine looking crabs using a red plastic bowl, some red pegs for nippers and some scrunched up paper to make the legs. We painted some yellow suns and added some cool sunglasses. We have a huge supply of yoghurt containers that were donated from a local dairy company so we used these to make some blue whales similar to the ones made from pots here.
As part of our colour focus we have been reading Eric Carle’s Brown Bear, Brown Bear. The children wear a card with one of the characters on and we take turns answering the questions in the book. For example, the brown bear child stands in the middle of the circle and the class asks the bear, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?” The child will respond, “I see a red bird looking at me.” and so we continue with all the other characters. I always say that I need someone especially clever to be the children as they have the most to say at the end. The children love to have this part and show each other how clever they are.
I made a blackline master to make our own book based on Eric Carle’s book. If you’d like a copy you can download it for free from here. On each page we are doing some art work to show what we see.
I’m in the process of creating other resources to add to teacherspayteachers.com. Below is the link that can be used to access my store:
